iPod iChing...
Jun. 3rd, 2005 04:18 pmWell, one of my aunts (not the good one) is in town for the next couple weeks while we move my grandma into assisted living. In honor of the fact that I will not survive without my headphones (the woman does not. shut. up.), here goes.
The rules are simple. Set whatever it is you're listening to to shuffle everything. No playlists or whatever. The first five songs that come up get put in here. The only circumstance you can skip something over is if it's either instrumental or an audiobook.
Song 1 The problem at hand: Alanis Morissette, "Doth I Protest Too Much"
Sample lyric:
I'm not jealous
I don't get moved by much
I'm not enraged
Not insecure as such
Not going insane
Rational stays in touch
Doth I protest too much?
Interpretation:
The problem, perhaps, is that I tend to try to be everything to everyone and then deny that I do. I doubt other people's motives almost implicitly and am still working on that.
Song 2 Your feelings about same: Barenaked Ladies, "Testing 1, 2, 3"
Sample lyric:
Maybe it would be fun
To get a new opinion
Get a little work done
And forget
Maybe it would be cool
If I rocked it old school
Try to break a gold rule
And a sweat
Better than the first time
Better than the worst time
If I could just reverse time
I'd be set
Interpretation:
(speaking of being "everything to everyone," that's the title of the album that this is on.)
Like I said, I'm working on it. And it does take work. It's still hard for me to believe that people actually want to be around me so sometimes I overcompensate for that and drive people away. And I do tend to blame it all on my early education, and that's a bit unfair to it (but not very much.)
Song 3 The environment in which you operate: Savage Garden, "Affirmation"
Sample lyric:
I believe the sun should never set upon an argument
I believe we place our happiness in other people's hands
I believe that junk food tastes so good because it's bad for you
I believe your parents did the best job they knew how to do
I believe that beauty magazines promote low self esteem
I believe I'm loved when I'm completely by myself alone
I believe in Karma what you give is what you get returned
I believe you can't appreciate real love 'til you've been burned
I believe the grass is no more greener on the other side
I believe you don't know what you've got until you say goodbye
Interpretation:
This is certainly how I *wish* I operated. Oddly enough, this song was the one that really helped me heal from the worst effects of said early education. I'm really starting to believe it, though.
Song 4 Immediate action to be taken: The Doors, "Riders on the Storm"
Sample lyric:
Riders on the storm
Riders on the storm
Into this house we’re born
Into this world we’re thrown
Like a dog without a bone
An actor out alone
Riders on the storm
Interpretation:
Maybe I have to do this alone? That seems just a tad counterintuitive. Maybe I'm meant to be on my own.
Song 5 Likely outcome: Norah Jones, "Toes"
Sample lyric:
Walked a mile just to find the edge
Some place low enough to step right in
Now I'm here and I can't begin to move
The spoiled sun up over there
It always has to have its way
And I know that the river's there to shelter me
Interpretation:
Everything will be all right and I will find what is meant to be somehow, even if something always overshadows it.
