Why is it that my hallmates can say stuff like "Well, you're gonna have to learn to like Friends", even in joking, but if I say "Well, you're gonna have to learn to like science fiction," even as a joke, they laugh at me?

Yeah, I never quite got into Friends either. I've seen a few episodes, and I might be able to tell them apart if given their names. I don't quite understand the appeal tho.

You know, there's only one way to describe that show:

No-one thought that comedy could ever be this lame,
Every week a diff'rent show, yet somehow all the same!

Maybe you girls should lock the nekulturny idiots in a small room and subject them to classic episodes of, say... Moonlighting, Cagney & Lacey, Stargate SG-1, Farscape, or The Phil Silvers Show. All of them long-running shows with rotating ensemble casts and a couple of well-known leads, all of them with character arcs, situational humour and such... and two of them are pretty notable comedies.
Nuts to Friends. We want more of Sgt. Bilko! (And no, I don't mean the crappy Steve Martin movie, either!!)

neurotypicals think that because they are more common than aspies, that aspies should learn to adapt to them and their interests instead of vice versa. The only way aspies will ever win is to lead a mass genocide of all the evil NT's of the universe (I'm just kidding)

They laugh 'cause they're ignorant, uncultured hicks...well, I shouldn't say that. There are science fiction-y hicks. In any case, as one of the pillars of the Anime Weirdo community, I feel your pain.

Y'might have better luck convincing them of the awesomeness of Science Fact, first. I probably hype this show too much, but everybody loves Mythbusters.

Ack, I apologize. I really do love SW Virginia, and I could never say anything bad about the people who live there. I think it's still okay for me to say bad things about people who watch Friends, though.

I dont live in SW Virginia. I live in Canada, thanks. I am talking about friends. I dont think you should call us names. Its rude and inconsiderate. You should really think about if you are going to hurt someone before you say something.

Well, you're right, of course. I would like to say, however, in my defense, I am an ignorant, uncultured hick, and as such my opinion is null.

Please know that I had no intention of offending anyone but the people who offended Lizzy. Though I do have a low esteem of the show Friends, the fact that the people who laughed at her liked that show was really more of a coincidence.

Yes, well. You may be an uncultured hick. I, however, am not.

Seeking revenge, though, is not a good way to go. So trying to offend someone who offended someone is just immature. I know you were just trying to defend Liz, but doing what they did to her is just stooping down to their level. Which by the looks of it, is not where you wish to be.

And you really shouldnt assume, as it makes an ASS of U and ME.

I appreciate the concern that you have for all persons involved in this situation, and I would like to make it clear that I'm certainly not the type of person who makes a habit of insulting anyone. Of course, I don't really think Friends watchers are ignorant. I only intended for it to be a joking "they-laughed-at-you-but-who-cares-what-they-think" type of remark. When I wrote it, I did pause to consider whether anyone would find it offensive, and if I had come to the conclusion that it would, rest assured I would not have said it.

I do stick with my amended statement that I am ignorant and foolish, but I don't want you to believe that I am mean or rude in any way because I do try very hard not to be.

Well, maybe you should have thought a little bit harder. Because obviously one person has taken an offence to what you previously stated.

Well, I still take offence to what he said. It was rude, and inconsiderate. And I will stand by what I have said.

I feel your pain.
Take comfort in the knowledge of your intellectual and imaginative superiority. Next time they mention Friends, just raise one eyebrow (this can be learned, if you can't do it...) and say 'I think not' in a supercilious tone...
