1. When John F. Kennedy was shot? (November 22 1963) Not born yet.
2. When John Lennon was shot? (December 8 1980) See "not born yet," above.
3. When Mt. St. Helens blew? (May 18 1980) How many times do I have to repeat this? But we have a nice picture someone in my extended family (one of Mom's uncles) took of the explosion. He lived in Washington at the time. Or maybe northern Oregon. But that area.
4. When the space shuttle Challenger exploded? (28 Jan 1986) Still two months (and two days) from being born. She was at work when she found out, and so was my dad. Dad was in a meeting at the time, and they interrupted it to announce it.
5. When the 7.1 earthquake hit San Francisco? (July 10 1989) Aurora. I can *just* remember seeing news reports and remarking that the buildings went "boom." (What? I was three!)
6. When the Berlin Wall fell? (July 11 1989) Aurora. My mom and dad told me that this was a very important thing but I didn't quite get it at the time.
7. When the Gulf War began? (Jan 16 1991) Aurora. I remember helping Mom tie a ribbon around the tree in front of our house.
8. When OJ Simpson was chased in his White Bronco? (17 June 1994) Denver. I don't remember seeing the chase, but I remember watching the verdict. I was actually in a hospital at the time, for some field trip.
9. When the building in Oklahoma City was bombed? (19 April 1995) Denver. The living room.
10. When Princess Di was killed? (August 31 1997) Denver. I didn't quite "get" this either, at the time.
11. When Bush was first announced President? (July 11 2000) I wish I could say I was out protesting, but I was actually still semi-conservative at the time. I was in the car on the way somewhere, and NPR was on, and they announced it. My reaction? "Well, we finally have a president."
12. When terrorists knocked over the World Trade Center (9/11/2001) In the car on the way to school. I got in right after the first tower was hit, and for a few minutes I thought it was an accident. The second plane hit when I was about midway to school (twenty-minute drive) and that's when I knew it was intentional. We didn't have my morning class that day (and it was a three-hour one, too). Every single TV in the school was on, and as people filtered in, they found one and just watched. This was the one and only time I've seen my 10th grade English teacher cry. There was Mass that day too (Catholic school and all... we had one a month and that was the day). I heard about the plane crashing in Pennsylvania during the sharing of the peace.
