OK, a fairly substantial rainstorm just passed over the area. There was hail in some areas and lots of lightning and stuff, and it caused plenty of street flooding. So I was watching the news a little while ago and one of the stations was using their "NewsCopter" to cover the worst sections of flooding. It's about knee-deep where the camera is and about half a dozen SUVs pass through the flooding with minimal problems except massive splashing. And then some moron in a brand new, bright red, *very* low-set sports car decides to brave the water. He made it maybe ten feet. Some people deserve what they get...

Date: 2004-07-29 06:39 am (UTC)I was driving down to see a friend in Aberystwyth, and the weather had been pretty bad all day. (It's a LONG drive down a lot of very twisty country roads - not bad country roads, but if you don't know 'em...)
Anyhow, it was raining hard, so I was being reasonably cautious. I came across an area where about 300' of the road dipped down a way, and was just underwater, so I pulled over and turned on my hazard lights to think. Got out, looked it over to see how deep it was, how bad it was across the camber... started doing some impromptu measurements with a stick. It seemed to just get deeper the further in you went, so I went back to the car to check the map. The last thing I wanted was to go up to the door panels in water and flood the engine.
Then this total hot-dog in a low-slung Ferrari shoots past me - straight through the water, kicking up spray like a speedboat. He gets maybe 30' in before his engine dies, at which point his car stalls and rolls to a stop, in just over two feet of water.
I was still sitting in the car, laughing madly, when a couple of police Land Rovers came from the other direction. They helped the guy out before informing us both that the bridge half a mile up the road was closed, so I had to take a very long alternative route, trekking out a long way and then back in, which put about four hours on my trip. But hey, it was worth it just to see the hot-dog get taken down a peg or two...
