Aug. 4th, 2004 09:05 pmOK, first off, I think I'm going to be sick. Read and weep.
Beyond that, I've had a good few days. Got a checking account opened and got through the DMV AGAIN. Third time seemed to be the charm, as I have my ID. They had it last time we were there too. But they didn't bother to put my name on "the list" either time so we had to convince the welcomer to ask a higher-up. Arapahoe County should be ashamed of how that place is. It's absolutely filthy. The kind of place where you flush the toilet with your foot.
We bought out Movie Gallery yesterday, too. Well, not really, but we rented loads of movies. Some to re-watch, some to watch for the first time. Some are for the movie night I'm having with Tianna on Friday. But I saw Big and Jerry Maguire today and liked both of them. JM was kind of surprising because I don't normally do the whole "romantic comedy" genre but I liked it. A lot.
Yeah, but anyway, that's why I haven't been on much lately.

Date: 2004-08-05 08:14 am (UTC)Re: the community post you linked to. There's an 8" step where I work, and it's prohibitively expensive for us to build a ramp, since it would involve buying a big chunk of sidewalk off the town council. You would be surprised what a foul temper some customers get into, to the point where last week I had to have the police remove a middle-aged gentleman who was beating the window with his cane. Sounds extreme? Well, yeah. I'd gone out of my way to try to help him, though, but he wouldn't be helped because I told him there wasn't enough room for his little electric scooter in the store (which is true, it's very small and very cramped and this thing was about twice as long as a wheelchair - even if I could've lifted it, he couldn't've gone anywhere in it!).
I'm all for access for the disabled, but not to the point where a business or historic building should suffer because of a design feature that pre-dates the accessibility laws and is too expensive to rectify. A local college had to sell its showpiece building because they couldn't afford the cost of installing a lift for the disabled (about $1.5 million, as the building was "Grade 2 Listed" and needed special treatment). And yet you never hear of anyone sueing a historic castle for being inaccessible...
Yeah, I have politics on the brain, and I'm starting to think too many people with disabilities (not the majority, but an already oversized and very vocal minority) seem to enjoy brandishing their status like a cudgel - "Do what I say or I'll sue you" - regardless of whether what they're asking is practical or affordable. As someone who has a mild disability himself, I hate to sound harsh but I wish they'd be grateful for what they've been granted by law and give a little ground to those of us who try to help as much as we can, but can't do everything someone with more power, or cash, or resources could do.

(Maybe I should lay off the Michael Moore stuff for a while, buuuut... I feel pro-active. It's a nice, zingy feeling.)

You're suprised by this?
Date: 2004-08-05 08:56 pm (UTC)It can be sickening indeed to see what they will do to keep the rich richer, and the poor poorer. Even use attack ads right out of the box. This is the same right wing that will lie, cheat, and steal in order to gain power so that they can payoff their special interest backers. They don't speak for the common man.
