Driving is kind of like sex. If you're not ready, you know you're not ready, so you surely shouldn't.

Why, then, is it not acceptable to have sex just because "everybody else does," but perfectly fine to not only pressure people into driving when they're not ready because "this world is meant for drivers" but also make them pay for it?

I can't trust myself behind 3500 pounds of metal. That's all there really is to it. It sucks, but it's true. It especially sucks when the person I was supposed to go see Serenity with bails without warning, leaving me trying to find another way to the theatre or go another day. It sucks even worse when I have people waiting for me and my ride is running late/gets lost/whatever. What sucks the worst? I have spent five years of my life being asked, "Oh, so you're 15/16/17/18/19 and you don't drive yet? Well, why not? No, really. Why?" And I'm sure carting me around isn't fun for drivers, either. But I don't care who else has confidence in my ability to drive. I don't, so I wouldn't be a safe driver. It's that simple. Do you really want someone like me in control of something like that?

Whoever invented interstate highways needs to die. Painfully.

And today was going so well, too...

Tangentially. Why is it that every time I start trusting people, they start doing that "oh, we forgot/you weren't around when we left/I decided to do something else" bit?

Fucking freshmen.

yeah...I got my license soon after I was of age...no right after, because I didn't care enough to miss school for the test...but I got it when I was 17 or something. I hate driving, tho. I go off into La-La-Land while I'm driving...and that's obviously bad. I don't really trust myself to drive. I will do it, if I need to go to the store, or to meet friends or something...but I don't at all miss driving while I'm here at school. Once every 3 months is perfect for me.

Just looked up that freshman chick in the CentreFold...still don't recognize her. So she just made up a major bullshit excuse for not contacting you/showing up? :-\ Sorry..

It's okay. I have a friend who's 21 and still doesn't drive. There isn't much point. She lives in NYC and can get cabs everywhere. Or, shock, walk/bike/rollerblade. But even when she lived here she didn't take driver's ed with me.

It's your choice, and if you don't think you're ready, that's okay. I don't know the whole story, but I will caution you not to let fear get in the way of learning, if that's the only problem. It's not like they're going to hand you keys and throw you on the highway right away. But, like I said before, I don't know your whole tale.

At the high school I graduated from, you HAD to take driver's ed in order to graduate. You didn't get to choose.

Sometimes I wish they would have had something like that here for highschool, not necessarily having driving ed as a compulsary subject, but at least as an option...

Would have made a lot more sense to do that for a subject than some of the other subjects we had o_O

I get the oh why dont you drive bit all the time, I just tell'em I dont want to, plus the fact that due to the MS I dont feel my feet most of the time, but thats besides the point :P

I think Eisenhower invented the interstate, and if it's any consolation, he did die slowly and painfully.

Thanks, Wikipedia!

darling lizboo--
i think the fact that you know that you wouldn't be a good driver and choose not to endanger others by driving is commendable. more should do the same.
anyway, screw the freshmen. come play with my rats.

-k!

Don't worry, I'm in the same boat... well sort of, I've put off getting my drivers for 3 years now... (we can only legally drive at 18years here)... and I'm only NOW getting my license (well in the process of it, going for the test in about a months time), and trust me, I've had more than my share of "Can I get a lift please?", "Sure"... 15min before whenever they are supposed to pick me up, "Sorry, something came up, you'll have to find another way," or, "I'll be 3 hours late, see you later"

O_o

Granted I can't get TOO pissy, but still, it's sortta disheartening... :(

I'm 21, and I still don't have a liscense. I'm getting pressured about it as well, even though I don't trust myself behind that much metal either.

Oh, and just in case you are interested, President Eisenhower got the idea for the Interstate system from the German Autobahns that he saw during WWII. So you'd have to blame the guy that came up with the German Autobahns.
