Oh, did I ever laugh at this.
Jul. 30th, 2009 11:07 pmOne thing anyone who knew my dad knows is that he never threw anything away if he could help it. (Unless "anything" was a perfectly good cardboard shipping box, in which case he'd get rid of it with extreme prejudice, but that isn't the point.)
We went through some of his hoard today, and came across the book from his old Bronco.
My grandpa bought a brand new Ford Bronco back in 1969, and when the time came for him to get a new car, he sold the Bronco to my dad. It was a tomato-soup red thing that constantly smelled of wet dog, but it survived very well until Dad was forced to sell it, or risk missing work due to a breakdown.
Grandpa used a little spiral-bound notebook to keep track of gas mileage and maintenance, and Dad continued the notebook when he bought the car. It's yellow and starting to fall apart. The opening pages have Dad's grades from a semester of high school.
What's really interesting, though, is the note at the beginning of the maintenance log:

Date: 2009-07-31 06:27 am (UTC)Grandpa died in 2002, Dad died earlier this month, and Grandma's memory is close to completely shot. Grandma's attitude could plausibly have been "Get a new car, the current one's a deathtrap, we have enough saved up and the kids are grown anyway" or "No way are you getting a new car when the old one's not THAT old."
Of course, I'll ask her -- even if she doesn't remember, I know she'd appreciate seeing the notebook -- but the only other living person who might know is not someone I'm on non-emergency speaking terms with.

Date: 2009-07-31 06:33 am (UTC)I absolutely love old books, journals, photos, etc. My parents have made a pretty big deal about the kids (me and my sister) having everything sorted out before they die. My sister claimed extremely valuable items, I told my mom that I only wanted her journals and parts of her book collection & encouraged them to spend their money doing fun things before they go. (And it would be nice if they outlived me, really.)
