Jan. 20th, 2005 01:10 amInsomnia sucks. But it's given me a chance to think:
The cost of the US war in Iraq (CW): $150,727,000,000
Number of people killed in the US war in Iraq (civilian and military) (PW): 17,582 (note: this ignores the "100,000 deaths" study as this is people *confirmed* killed as a result of the war)
The amount of aid the US has pledged for tsunami relief (CT): $350,000,000
Number of people killed in the tsunami (PT): 212,000
And from here:
Amount of federal funding of public education(CEa): $29,100,000,000
Amount of governmental funding of public education (CEb): $228,200,000,000
Number of students enrolled in US public schools (PE): 47,917,774
CW/PW=$8,572,801.73/person killed in Iraq
CT/PT=$1,650.94/person killed by the tsunami
CEa/PE=$607.29/child in public school (just the federal gov't)
CEb/PE=$4,762.32/child in public school (federal and state gov'ts)
So wait a second. Maybe a potential draft isn't such a bad thing after all. I want to be worth $8.5 million dollars! (Of course, my mom always said I was priceless...) At any rate, I know where the government's priorities lie...
There was a bumper sticker I once read that said "This will be a perfect world when the schools have all the money they need and the army has to hold bake sales to buy a bomb." *sigh*

Date: 2005-01-20 09:25 pm (UTC)1) Stupid people make better cannon fodder because they don't question orders when under fire (or at any other time, for that matter).
2) An uneducated populace is more malleable to the propaganda machine that calls for the cannon fodder to be deployed for ridiculous reasons in the first place.
NCLB was designed to dismantle the public school system, not to "fix" education. Oh, and it also requires schools to release students' contact information to armed forces recruiters so they can hound people into enlisting. Fun, innit?
