So yeah. I'm doing Science and still alive.

Work's been decent to me except for the parts that suck, and those parts would suck no matter what I did, so there's no point complaining about it. (Well, a week ago Thursday really did suck but I'm not going to get into that, and that particular depressive spike is mostly done anyway.)

I have a new phone (G1 > iPhone. Hands down.) and new-to-me computer (logic board was close to going on Aeryn and I wanted to trade up while I still could, so I did. The phone is named Pilot, because it's mostly quiet but helps me get places and reminds me of Important Things. The computer doesn't have a name yet, so I'll be posting a poll to help name it later. (All my tech has Farscape-related names.)

Also, new shoes. I've never enjoyed wearing shoes, especially the closed-toed kind, but I found a pair that actually fits today and you don't turn down something like that. (Plus they were on sale.)

I signed up for the Firefly Big Bang over at Dreamwidth. Don't know what got into me, but I'm going to do it, dammit. (I have some sketchy ideas for a River story set post-movie...)

Pittsburgh won the Stanley Cup, which is awesome, if only because it means Detroit didn't. My CEO (who's a thoroughly awesome guy -- I wish I could clone him and put him in charge of everything) was cheering for the Red Wings because they weren't the Penguins (who had defeated his beloved Capitals), and I was cheering for the Pens because they weren't Detroit, so we had an informal rivalry going on.

Procrastinating about getting the cleaning that desperately needs to be done, done. Better get on that before it gets too late and I get too tired.

So, I just watched the most recent Heroes episode today.

Not spoiling anything here except to say that it was kind of disappointing.

I also want to point out the date stamp on this little gem. So now I feel all vindicated-like. It's awesome, in a dysfunctional sort of way.

In other news, I've had to go back to my boring old QWERTY keymap. There's a good reason for it, though, and I'm not going to ruin it by talking about it at this stage. (Besides, then I wouldn't get to be mysterious.)
hopefulnebula: Mandelbrot Set with text "You can change the world in a tiny way" (Default)
I actually think I'm forgetting how to type on QWERTY.

I don't get it. You can learn another language without losing your old one. You can learn to cook brownies without forgetting your grandma's snickerdoodle recipe.

So, I ask: What the fuck, brain? Is this just a learning-curve thing or am I going to need to divide my time between keyboard layouts or what? Because I can't afford to lose QWERTY, I just can't.

A note.

I'm learning Dvorak again. For real this time. So if you catch me typing really slowly in the next few weeks, that's why. (I remember more than I thought, which is good, but the punctuation is a bitch.)

EDIT: Case in point: my HTML failure. Sorry about that.

So. I just now finished my paper. (Yeah, yeah, I know. Stuff it.)

The song that comes on my iTunes shuffle as I save it?

Barenaked Ladies - "Who Needs Sleep?".

*dies laughing*

(Why no, I'm not punchy. Not at all.)

+Back on campus. Yay real Internet! Yay awesome room!

++I CAN HAS COMPUTER! It was waiting for me in the mail.

-reinstalling FF addons, etc.

---Rifling through the contents of my external HD... let's see, documents, yes... music, yes... PROGRAMS? PICTURES? WHAT THE FUCK I KNOW I SAVED YOU AAAAAAAAAAAARGH! That and bookmarks.html didn't save right. *gripes* (Bookmarks aren't as big a deal anyway; I'd been meaning to cull them. But my Strasbourg pictures are gone! *snif*)

--Don't say the universe doesn't have a sense of irony. I step out the door of the building to get some of my stuff from storage. Including the box that has my first aid kit. The result?

Ow ow ow ow ow ow ow ow ow ow ow FUCKING OW. )

Also, I scraped my wrist (that's the bandage you can see, but the tape sucked so I'm going to rebandage it in a bit) and my knee.

OW. OW OW OW.

+++I wasn't wearing my glasses when that last bit happened. If I had been, I'd probably be paying a visit to the ER.

-Fuck. Videos I bought on iTunes are missing too, just because I downloaded them after my last backup. Well, there goes half of Christmas.

+Olivia wished me a happy Valentine's day today. I think that's cute.

-Fucking ow.

Well, I've done it. It was relatively painless, at that. Aeryn's in the shop. I love being right all the time--the guy took one look at it and goes "yep, it's the hard drive. Easy fix but we'll still have to triage it and all that. So it'll be a few days." The good news: they'll ship straight to Centre, so I don't need to beg for a ride some weekend. The best news: unless they discover something untoward that I'm completely unaware of doing, it's covered under warranty. Even the shipping.

In other news, I'm still about a... a very tiny distance from getting voted off [livejournal.com profile] therealljidol. If it goes to a runoff, I'm going to post again tomorrow and bother you all again. I know community-only votes are a pain in the ass, but it takes all of thirty seconds to join, vote, and leave. (Unless you're on a connection like this one, in which case it's closer to five minutes. But if I can do it in five minutes, so can you.)

The voting post is here. I'm in the first poll, in a tie for second-to-last. The last two people in each poll get eliminated, and I really don't want to be in that number... But see? There's boobies in my icons!

Thanks to those of you who've voted for me, though. Miss Moony, I'm looking at you.

Gah. Can't work in computer labs. Especially when people are being loud. Will type up a fic or three I've written instead. (Probably just the one tonight.) (Oh, and the one I have typed up but not LJ-ified.)

Anyway. I swear, somebody was passing out the crazy pills this morning. I can't remember the last time I laughed so hard... I'm not going to go into too many details, but I'll never look at the word "sheath" the same way again.

Also, I need to go into my brain with some bleach or something. Because my mind? So filthy today. (Unfortunately, not the kind of filthy that'll get me anywhere except doubled over in laughter when somebody answers the phone and says "Are you coming?". But laughter's good too.)
hopefulnebula: Mandelbrot Set with text "You can change the world in a tiny way" (Default)
Well, it seems the universe has given up on taunting me. Since around 10 last night, things have been going well.

EXCEPT I STILL DON'T HAVE MY MOTHERFUCKING BOOT DISKS and now I know they won't be in until Monday because the mailroom doesn't do weekends here. (And that's hoping the disks even work. I'm betting they will, unless the problem is mechanical and not the computer just forgetting where it put the startup files.) (Note to self: print out google maps for Apple Stores in Louisville, just in case.)

So much for Express Mail.

That said, I'm slowly slogging through the fpage now I have more than a half hour to spare. I posted in [livejournal.com profile] medie's love meme here and even though I feel kind of weird actually posting this to my journal, I took a bye from LJ Idol this week so I figure I might do a little attention-whoring anyway. If you post a comment for yourself, let me know.
hopefulnebula: Mandelbrot Set with text "You can change the world in a tiny way" (Default)
To summarize: Yesterday sucked. Today was going to suck less but so far hasn't succeeded.

Naming my computer "Aeryn" seems to have been prophetic: it made it not quite two years before... well, if you've seen the Farscape episode "Season of Death," that's the approximate situation. Without the freezing water or the cryostasis or the crazy!Crichton. (The boot CD should arrive in the mail tomorrow. At least I knew exactly where in my room back home it was stored.)

Also. I said this to somebody privately but want to do it publicly as well: Just because I used to work for LJ Support (also: note, "used to") doesn't make me a slave to every problem you have with your journal or with the site. When I worked (again, note the past tense) for LJ Support, it was as a volunteer. Voluntarily choosing then to go to a page that aggregated people's LJ problems and choosing what questions to answer is a vastly different world from having total strangers come to me with their LJ problems (especially when there's an FAQ with the EXACT SAME TITLE AS THEIR QUESTION, at that). I helped this particular total stranger but plan on ignoring and ban_setting any others who may come by, as well as whomever told them to come to me instead of reading the FAQ and/or filing a Support request. Even when I was a support volunteer, I hated answering questions asked directly to me. If you have a friend who's a plumber and you have a drippy faucet, do you call them at midnight when they're off duty and tell them to fix it for free? No? It boggles me why people ask the exact same thing from tech support as a whole.

(Also. This one is more of a PSA than anything: Yes, I have a Facebook account. No, I never use it. I don't think I even remember the password. And since I never use it anyway, it's not really a problem. So I'm sorry if I don't reciprocate the adds I've been getting...)
hopefulnebula: Mandelbrot Set with text "You can change the world in a tiny way" (Default)
OK. Today's list of people and things that I'd send to the cornfield if I could stands as follows:

-Epstein and Barr and their stupid virus, which evidently my sister has as well now
-Anybody who makes a "kissing disease" joke regarding the above
-Micro Center
-SONY
-The warranty people Micro Sucker uses (and I use that term loosely)
-ADT Security and my neighbor's malfunctioning alarm system
-The Arapahoe County Sheriff's Department and the asshole they sent out re: the above
-Micro Center
-Micro Center
-Micro Center

Get the point?
hopefulnebula: Mandelbrot Set with text "You can change the world in a tiny way" (Default)
OK. So. I'm at home. Posting from my MacBook (♥). And it's not wired up to the router. First time that's ever happened. That's because the problem wasn't so much with the genuine, bona fide, honest to God, real life copy of a piece of shit, $35 on eBay router, but was the router itself. It and MacOS 10.4.9 can't talk nicely to each other. So, we trekked out to the local Apple Store today to buy an AirPort Express. It's sexy and about 1/4 of the size. And it was hell to get set up--not because of the AirPort, but because I had to power cycle everything, and Comcast requires that you call them before power cycling their modem. (Unplugging is good enough for most things, but as Comcast themselves own the modem in question, they don't take too kindly to full-on power cycling. *rolls eyes*

So, anyway. After convincing the Comcast tech that no, all I wanted to do was power cycle, really, just auth me, I finally got everything going. Yay me. /flex

Subeta's laggy as fuck, but then again, it always is. So I'm not worried about that.

Now if only my good mouse would arr--wait a second, why am I using this one? I have a travel mouse in my luggage. *takes it out* OK, that's better. (was using the family's PoS spare.) Correction: now if only I had pants that fit and weren't super formal or in the wash. The only ones that aren't either are in transit between Kentucky and here.
hopefulnebula: Mandelbrot Set with text "You can change the world in a tiny way" (Default)
Currently at the Hub for its free WiFi (and its sticky buns and Jones Soda). The wired connection problem is almost certainly hardware, since I've ruled out the cord as a culprit. It's weird... when I run Network Diagnostics to see what the eff is going on, the first option flashes on and off like the cord's being plugged in and unplugged. I don't think it's the outlet, as my roommate's computer connects fine, to both plugs. That makes me nervous... I know the wired connection worked before I left. Maybe it got jostled in transit, or maybe both the cords work for my roommate but not me? Well, I'll probably dump it off at ITS's computer fair (apologies for [livejournal.com profile] catguy for making extra work for him) and see if they can configure it. If they can, it's the connection. If they can't... well, I have AppleCare. Either way, this is a pain. And I'm nervous that I broke something.

EDIT: Oh, hey. Got to run software update. That certainly can't be helping. *runs it and hopes*
hopefulnebula: Mandelbrot Set with text "You can change the world in a tiny way" (Default)
OK, I'm here and exhausted and my computer doesn't want to let me configure it for the internet. Will be fixing that later, or making ITS do it *g*. And I accidentally posted that voicepost I promised private; fixed that. Not touching my flist except for the support and comics filters.
hopefulnebula: Mandelbrot Set with text "You can change the world in a tiny way" (Default)
The bad news: I leave town in roughly 11 hours and my Sony's still in shop.

The good news: All my wheedling begging whining negotiation with my parents worked and I got a loan from them. I am now once again a proud Mac owner. My new MacBook is named Aeryn (to go with the Farscape naming theme: sleek, sexy, small, and reliable). I'm too lazy to configure this router when I'm not going to be here for more than 11 more hours, so I'm right now sitting in the omfghot spare bedroom, on the floor, because that's where the only wired connection is.

Of course this means I'll be putting my begging skills to work finding a job, but that can be managed.

The bleh news: It looks like I'm going to have to find a new LJ client. OS X doesn't seem to like Deepest Sender. Fixed. Restarting FF helped. :)

I'll phone post when I'm safely in Lexington, and on Saturday when I reach school. (I'll be spending the interim loafing in Lex-Vegas and making sure the TSA didn't get too up close and personal with my luggage.)
hopefulnebula: Mandelbrot Set with text "You can change the world in a tiny way" (Default)
Did you know that on computers with older ATI video cards, you can hit ctrl+alt+any arrow key and rotate the screen? The down arrow flips it upside down. The side arrows rotate it 90 degrees either way from vertical. And up puts it back to normal. (I didn't know until a couple nights ago, when I did it. Totally freaked me out.)

On another, completely unrelated note... can any of you Centre ITS types tell me what kind of video cards the lab comps use?
hopefulnebula: Mandelbrot Set with text "You can change the world in a tiny way" (Default)
I decided that even though I took my comp home in frustration, it'd be a good idea to call upper management at Micro Sucker and see if I could hammer something out with them.

The good news: I did.

The bad news: it means I'm bringing the computer back this afternoon. They'll be shipping it directly to Sony as opposed to the warranty-approved repair center. And it'll be on their dime. (It had damn well better.)

The part that sucks is? The replacement router is on a FedEx truck that's going through Denver and will arrive here later today. But, I'll be able to use a real IRC client, and go online somewhere that isn't absolutely boiling.

In the meantime, I've been amusing myself with this.

*sits down in the middle of her post and cries*
hopefulnebula: Mandelbrot Set with text "You can change the world in a tiny way" (Default)
I chose dance.

Evidently I was wrong.

This time I took the comp back anyway, though, and plan on calling the manager in the morning. Will also be sending a letter to corporate.

Fucking liars. It's a good thing I've chosen not to work for them on the off chance they *do* end up hiring me, so I can rant about them as publicly as I damn well please.

And I was in such a good mood earlier today too...
hopefulnebula: Mandelbrot Set with text "You can change the world in a tiny way" (Default)
Good news: my comp's ready to be picked up.
Bad news: Our router's still dead.

I'm not sure whether to dance or to cry.
hopefulnebula: Mandelbrot Set with text "You can change the world in a tiny way" (Default)
So. I'm sending the comp in for more repairs today and it'll be up to two weeks before I get it back.

However, I have my own account on the downstairs office comp now so I can IRC and play GW and stuff; I just won't be online as often.

...that is, once this disk is done burning. BURN, DAMMIT. Don't make me get the matches.
